Solid bars — soap, shampoo, shave and conditioner — cut down on plastic bottles and travel well. They also behave differently from the liquids most of us grew up with. The first week with a shampoo bar is often the hardest, and most people who give up do so because nobody told them what to expect. Here's what to know before you switch.

Two very different kinds of bar

Cold-process (true soap) barsSyndet bars
What they areOils and butters reacted with lye (saponification); the lye is used up in the processMade with synthetic or plant-derived surfactants, like liquid shampoo in solid form
pHAlkalineUsually closer to skin and hair's slightly acidic pH
FeelRich, often with natural glycerin retainedSimilar to bottled shampoo
Hair transitionCan feel waxy or heavy at first, especially in hard waterUsually little transition

Cold process is a slow, low-heat soapmaking method. The finished bars are cured for several weeks before sale, which lets water evaporate and produces a harder, longer-lasting bar. Check which type a shampoo bar is — the label usually lists either oils with "sodium" names (soap) or surfactants such as sodium cocoyl isethionate (syndet).

How to use a shampoo bar

  1. Wet your hair thoroughly

More water than you'd use for liquid shampoo — the bar needs it to lather.

  2. Rub the bar between your hands or glide it over your hair

Either works. If gliding, go in the direction hair grows, a few strokes on the scalp, to avoid tangles.

  3. Work the lather into your scalp

Massage with fingertips; the scalp is where the oil and dirt are. Lengths get clean as the lather rinses through.

  4. Rinse longer than usual

Residue is what makes hair feel heavy. Rinse until hair feels squeaky-clean at the roots.

The "transition period", explained

With soap-based shampoo bars, some people find hair feels waxy, tacky or limp for the first washes. Two things are usually behind it: residue left by silicones from previous products, and minerals in hard water reacting with soap to form a film. It's not a sign the bar is wrong for you — but if it doesn't settle after a couple of weeks, a syndet bar may suit your water better.

Storing bars so they last

A bar that sits in water melts into mush. It needs to dry completely between uses.

  • Use a draining dish. Slats, a raised grid or a sponge-free rack let water run off.
  • Keep it out of the spray. A shelf away from the shower stream doubles a bar's life.
  • Cut big bars in half. Use one half at a time; the other stays dry and hard.
  • Travel: let the bar dry before packing it in a tin, or use a breathable bag.

Other bars worth knowing

  • Shave bars: lather with a wet brush or hands for a slick, protective layer.
  • Conditioner bars: glide over wet lengths, not the scalp, then rinse.
  • Balms and salves: solid, water-free products for dry spots; a little goes a long way.

Conclusion

Bars work well once you use plenty of water, focus on the scalp, rinse thoroughly and let the bar dry between uses. Expect a short adjustment with soap-based shampoo bars, especially in hard water, and know that syndet bars exist if it doesn't settle. Keep bars on a draining dish away from the spray, and they'll outlast a bottle or two of liquid.
