Laptops rarely die from a dramatic fall. More often it's the bag dropped onto a hard floor, a corner knocked against a doorframe, or a heavy charger pressing into the lid in a crowded bag. The way you carry a laptop should answer one question first: what's most likely to hit it in your day?

Where laptops actually get hurt

  • Corners and edges. When a bag is dropped, it usually lands on a corner or edge first. That's where screens crack and cases dent.
  • Pressure. Books, chargers and bottles pressing on the lid can mark or even crack a screen over time.
  • Scratches and spills. Keys, grit and the occasional leaking bottle.

Good protection concentrates padding at corners and edges, separates the laptop from other contents, and resists water.

The sleeve: protection you can move between bags

A sleeve isn't only for carrying alone. Its real strength is that it moves with the laptop — into a tote, a suitcase or a backpack with a thin compartment — so the protection doesn't depend on whichever bag you grabbed. Look for corner reinforcement, a soft lining that won't scratch, and a separate pocket so the charger doesn't press on the lid.

The backpack: for distance and weight

Two straps spread weight, which matters when you walk or cycle with a laptop, charger and everything else. The best laptop backpacks hold the laptop compartment slightly above the bottom of the bag, so a backpack set down hard doesn't transfer the impact straight into the laptop's edge.

The briefcase: smart, but check the base

A briefcase or messenger looks right in a meeting and keeps documents flat. Check how much padding sits at the bottom and sides of the laptop section — a slim, smart bag sometimes saves its thickness from exactly there.

Getting the size right

Bags are sized by screen size ("fits up to 14 inches"), but laptops with the same screen size vary in width and depth. Measure your laptop's actual dimensions and compare them with the bag's internal compartment size. A sleeve should be snug — a laptop that slides around inside loses much of the padding's benefit.

One brand built around corner protection

Tomtoc, founded in 2016, designs much of its range around the corner-impact problem. Its 360° CornerArmor system, which debuted on the brand's A13 sleeve, concentrates reinforcement at corners and edges rather than spreading uniform padding everywhere. The idea runs across its Defender, Voyage, Terra and Light lines — from slim sleeves to structured briefcases — and the brand states its bags passed a military-standard drop test certification in September 2020. Tomtoc also makes cases for the Nintendo Switch and other gaming gear.

Conclusion

Pick by your day: a backpack if you walk, cycle or carry a lot; a briefcase if you mostly go door to door and want to look smart; and a well-fitted sleeve with reinforced corners in almost every case, because it protects the laptop whichever bag it ends up in. Measure the laptop rather than trusting the screen size, and keep chargers off the lid.
