Car Floor Mats Compared: TPE, XPE, Rubber or Carpet — Which Suits Your Tesla?

All-weather or carpet? What TPE, XPE and rubber mats are, how each handles mud, snow, smell and heat, and why model-specific fit matters more than the material.

Floor mats are the accessory people replace first and think about least. Yet they take more abuse than anything else in the cabin: wet shoes, gravel, coffee, dog paws, salt. The material decides how easy that mess is to deal with, and the fit decides whether it stays on the mat or ends up in the carpet underneath.

The materials, in plain terms

TPE thermoplastic elastomer
A rubber-like plastic that's moulded into a precise shape with raised edges. Firm but flexible, waterproof, easy to rinse, and usually low-odour. The common material for "all-weather" tray-style mats.
XPE cross-linked polyethylene foam
A closed-cell foam, often used as a lighter layer or in layered mats. Waterproof and cushiony, quieter underfoot, but softer and more prone to denting and wear at the heel.
Rubber
Heavy, grippy and very durable. Can be stiff in the cold, and some cheaper rubber smells strongly, especially in a hot car.
Carpet
Matches the cabin, feels warm and absorbs road noise. Holds dirt and water, so it needs vacuuming and drying, and stains are harder to remove.

Fit matters more than material

A tray mat only works if it covers the floor right up to the sills and pedals and holds its shape. Universal trim-to-fit mats leave gaps where dirt slips underneath. Model-specific mats are moulded to one floor shape — and with Teslas that means the exact model and generation, since floors and console shapes changed between, for example, earlier and later Model 3 and Model Y versions.

  • Driver's side: the mat must not slide or bunch near the pedals. Use the car's retention points if it has them, and never stack a second mat on top.
  • Front trunk and rear trunk: many owners use matching liners here too — the rear trunk and under-floor storage take the most wet gear.
  • Rear seats: check whether a one-piece rear mat covers the centre hump in your model.

Which to choose

  • Snow, salt, kids, dogs, hiking: TPE tray mats with high edges, at least in the front.
  • City driving, mostly dry: carpet for comfort and quiet, or a TPE driver's mat with carpet elsewhere.
  • Want something softer underfoot but waterproof: layered mats with an XPE layer.
  • Heavy work boots daily: rubber or a thick TPE mat with a reinforced heel area.

Cleaning tips by material

TPE and rubber: take them out, rinse with water and a little mild soap, dry before refitting. Avoid tyre shine or silicone sprays on floor mats — they make the surface slippery. Carpet: vacuum often, blot spills straight away, and let wet mats dry outside the car so damp doesn't soak into the floor beneath.

Where to find model-specific mats

Teslaunch — which rebranded to T-Launch in 2025 while remaining the same company — sells a catalog of more than 500 Tesla accessories for Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck, including floor mats and seat covers among its interior items. Whatever you buy, match the listing to your exact model and year, and check it covers the trunks if that's where your mess actually goes.

Conclusion

For most drivers, model-specific TPE tray mats are the practical default: waterproof, easy to rinse and shaped to keep mess contained. Carpet is the comfortable choice for dry climates and tidy passengers; layered XPE sits in between; rubber is for the heaviest wear. Whichever you pick, exact fit and a secure driver's mat matter more than the material itself.
