Tesla Phone Key, Key Card or Key Ring Not Working? Fixes in the Order to Try Them

Why a Tesla doesn't unlock when you walk up, why a key card or RFID ring won't start the car, and what to check first — Bluetooth, app permissions, reader position and pairing.

In this guide

A Tesla can be opened three common ways: your phone as a key over Bluetooth, an NFC key card you tap, and — increasingly — accessories like RFID key rings that work the same way as a card. When one stops working, it's almost always the setup around it rather than the car. Work through these fixes in order; the early ones are the most common and the quickest.

Phone key doesn't unlock when you walk up

Nothing happens at the door

Symptom
You reach the car with your phone in your pocket and it stays locked, or unlocks only after you open the app.
Likely cause
The phone has stopped the Tesla app from running in the background, or Bluetooth is off.
Try
  1. Check Bluetooth is on (not just "disconnected" from other devices).
  2. In your phone's settings, allow the Tesla app to run in the background, refresh in the background and use location "Always" — the app needs these to work as a key without being opened.
  3. Turn off battery-saving modes that restrict background apps, or exempt the Tesla app.
  4. Make sure you're still logged in to the app; open it once and check the car shows as connected.

Works for one person, not another

Symptom
The car unlocks for the main driver but not for a second driver's phone.
Likely cause
The second phone was never set up as a key on that car, or the car has reached its key limit.
Try
  1. Check the key list on the car's touchscreen (under the Locks settings).
  2. Add the phone as a key from the second person's own app while in the car, then confirm with an authenticated key card.
  3. Delete old phones you no longer use.

Key card isn't read

Tapping the card does nothing

Symptom
You tap the card on the car and it doesn't unlock.
Likely cause
Wrong spot, or something in your wallet or case is interfering.
Try
  1. Tap the card flat against the reader area on the driver's side door pillar (on Model 3 and Model Y) and hold it for a moment.
  2. Take it out of a wallet or phone case — other NFC cards and metal can block the read.
  3. Try the second card, if you have one. If neither works, the reader may need a service visit.

Doors open but the car won't drive

Symptom
The card unlocks the car but you get a "no key detected" message when you try to drive.
Likely cause
With only a card, the car needs it placed on the interior reader to authorise driving.
Try
  1. Place the card on the card reader in the centre console area (the exact spot varies by model and year — your owner's manual shows it), then press the brake.
  2. Leave it there a second or two before shifting.

Key ring or other RFID accessory won't work

A new key ring isn't recognised

Symptom
A new RFID key ring or wearable does nothing when tapped.
Likely cause
It hasn't been added as a key yet. Accessories like these behave like a key card, so the car must pair with them first.
Try
  1. From the touchscreen's key settings, choose to add a key, then tap the new ring on the reader as prompted.
  2. Authenticate with an existing key card when asked.
  3. Test it on both the door pillar and the console reader before relying on it.
  4. Check it's listed as compatible with your exact model and year — fit and reader position differ between generations.

Still not working?

A soft reset of the touchscreen (following the steps in your owner's manual) clears many software hiccups. Check for a pending software update, and if keys stop working after a 12-volt battery warning, the low-voltage battery may need attention. Beyond that, book a service appointment through the app.

About Teskay

Teskay sells Tesla accessories organised by model generation — Model 3 Highland, Model Y Juniper, older Model 3 and Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck — across interior, exterior, wheel, carbon-fibre trim, charging and Starlink-mount categories. Its range includes a Smart Key Ring the brand describes as zirconia ceramic with RFID. As with any key accessory, pair it as a key on your car and keep a key card as backup.

Conclusion

For a phone key, the usual fix is background permissions and Bluetooth; for a key card, it's tapping the right spot and keeping it away from other cards; for a key ring or wearable, it's pairing it as a key in the first place. Work in that order, keep a card in your wallet, and most "my Tesla won't unlock" moments take a minute to solve.
